The 7 Sons

September 2, 2022 @ 7:30 pm CDT

Event Description

The leader of the Flippers has had a medical emergency and The Flippers will not be able to perform this show. The show will go on with The 7 Sons performing two 60 minutes sets. The 7 Sons are bringing on some members that were to perform with the Flippers and some extra vocalists to make it a great show.

The Seven Sons got their start at Morningside College in Sioux City. The members of the band thought it would be fun to start a band and make a little side cash. The group consisted of band leader Rick Mellor-trumpet, Rick Knobe-bass, Doug Dingle-lead guitar, Larry Dixon-drums, lead singer-Ed Wade, Dan Horswell-sax and Alan Oliver-keyboards.

Most Midwest ‘60s bands started playing local venues, maybe recording a record, and then hoped they could score a job at a large regional ballroom to open for a national artist.

The Seven Sons story is quite different, yet they started out with this same career model –– being booked, for example, by a local Sioux City, Iowa booking agent. Their first dates were mainly on the regional ballroom circuit which brought them to Hatfield in 1967. They would travel to Milford, Iowa and record at the famed IGL Recording Studios. The result was their release of “House Of The Rising Sun/Don’t You Dare Say No” (IGL #110). The record was picked up by the famed Soma Records from Minneapolis, and re-released on Soma with the same two titles, Soma #1462.

Because of the Soma release, they were picked up by VTI (Variety Theater International) Booking Agency out of Duluth. This was quite fortuitous for the band. VTI specialized in booking national artists all across the United States in single shows or multi-artist shows, with a heavy dose of college shows. The Seven Sons were brought into VTI to tour nationally and open or co-headline for an endless list of national artists.

This list of artists reads like a ballot of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Buckle up, here is a partial list: Lovin’ Spoonful, Beach Boys, Sonny & Cher, Herman’s Hermits, Mamas & Papas, Gary Lewis & The Playboys, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Mitch Ryder & Detroit Wheels, Turtles, 1910 Fruitgum Co, Grass Roots, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Righteous Brothers, 5th Dimension, Vanilla Fudge, Hollies, Tommy James & The Shondells, Peter & Gordon, Everly Brothers, Outsiders, Bobby Vee, Three Dog Night, Blood Sweat & Tears, the Buckinghams, Electric Prunes, and Cryan’ Shames to just name some.
